A woman with long dark hair, wearing a pink shirt and patterned pants, is singing passionately while standing in front of a large window. Another woman with shoulder-length blonde hair, wearing a black jacket, is sitting at a black piano, listening attentively inside a room with wooden flooring and city buildings visible outside through the window.

POP/ROCK Classes

  • Most singers can get a pop song about 80% of the way there, but it’s the last 20% that makes the difference. Specific nuance tools (i.e. flips, bends, turns, vowel modifications, rapid texture shifts) are what define pop/rock styles. In this class, you’ll bring your pop/rock material and work 1:1 with Shannah on applying these techniques. As a bonus each session includes a new pop/rock exercise with a take-home mp3 track as a bonus. Commercial track members are guaranteed seats; drop-ins welcome if space allows.

    LIMIT:  8 Singers

MEETS:  First and 3rd Monday from 6:00pm-8:00pm

Included in the Wail Studio Series Commercial Membership (Registration for Fall 2025 is closed.)

DROP IN:  $89 (if space allows.)

  • SEPTEMBER:  CRY, SIGH, & FRY

Learn to sing with the same rich textures you hear from artists like Adele, Jazmine Sullivan, Bruno Mars, Teddy Swims, or Demi Lovato. In this workshop, we’ll break down three powerful tools, cry, sigh, and fry—and how to use them to create your distinctive pop/rock style. You’ll learn when to add them, how to keep them healthy, and practice applying them directly to your songs. Leave with new colors in your voice that make your singing sound radio-ready.

    OCTOBER:  BREAKS, BLENDS, & BENDS

Some of the most exciting pop/rock moments happen when a singer bends a phrase, blends chest and mix into a seamless belt, or leans into a break instead of hiding it. Think about the cracks John Mayer lets sit in his lines, the slides Hayley Williams uses to amp up a chorus, or the smooth mix connection you hear from H.E.R. In this workshop, we’ll dig into these three tools, breaks, blends, and bends, and show you how to apply them to your own songs. You’ll leave with new textures and phrasing choices that give your voice polish, flexibility, and edge.

    NOVEMBER:  RIFFS, RUNS, & RHYTHM

Some of the most exciting pop and R&B vocals come from riffs, runs, and the way singers play with rhythm. From Beyoncé’s precision, to Tori Kelly’s agility, to the syncopated phrasing of Bruno Mars, these tools shape modern pop styles. In this workshop, we’ll break down how riffs and runs are built, how to keep them clean and in tune, and how to use rhythm to make your phrasing pop. You’ll leave with step-by-step tools to add flexibility, agility, and precision to your singing.
